The World Bank has been increasingly focused on addressing the challenges presented by Fragile, Conflict, and Violence (FCV) contexts, where poverty is rapidly growing and development gains are rapidly diminishing. In particular, conducting socio-economic analysis in FCV settings, such as in the case of Yemen, presents specific and unique challenges that go beyond those encountered in non-FCV settings.
One of the major challenges in FCV contexts is the availability and reliability of data. Traditional data systems are often weak or non-existent, leading to a lack of data availability or data that is significantly delayed or unreliable.
The advent of big data and geospatial/satellite resources, however, has increased the array of analytical approaches available and has made it possible to advance socio-economic analysis in these complex contexts. This is evident in the recent Yemen Country Economic Memorandum (2022) where satellite imagery, including nighttime illumination data and other novel data instruments, have been used to close the economic knowledge gap.
