NLT Supports Bi-Coastal GIS Day Events

New Light Technologies (NLT) brings its celebration of the innovative promise GIS brings to all corners of the country. From Florida to California, NLT staff were engaged with GIS professionals on the ground in cultivating their mapping technology skills and educating the community on new, cutting-edge geospatial tools rolling out onto the field today.

As part of Geography Awareness Week, the company sponsored a Mapathon event co-hosted by the State College of Florida (SCF) and the Gulf Coast GIS Users Group. Led by Carl Anderson of NLT, a small dedicated group of Manatee County staff from a number of departments and SCF students learned how they can help humanitarian efforts by mapping in OpenStreetMap (OSM). The group practiced how to make maps on the OSM interface; how to use the Humanitarian OSM team tasker to find current humanitarian support effort tasks; and then mapped for a couple of hours. The team mapped areas in Tanzania to support international health efforts by mapping roads, footways and buildings.

New Light also sponsored the Geo4Dev Conference hosted at University of California, Berkley. Ran Goldblatt, chief scientist at NLT, co-chaired the entire event, and NLT FEMA Team Lead Madeline Jones exhibited the powerful web application the Hurricane Incident Journal, which visualizes hazard exposure, predictive impacts and damage costs that a storm will have on communities.

“New Light has unmatched commitment to education and capacity-building with Geospatial Technologies around the USA and the World” Ghermay Araya, CEO of NLT, said looking forward to the future where geospatial advancements can do the most good by solving some of humanity’s most pressing obstacles.
