Supporting FEMA’s Geospatial Mission for Disaster Response and Recovery

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) relies on robust geospatial capabilities to support disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation efforts across the United States. For nearly two decades, New Light Technologies, Inc. (NLT) has been a trusted partner in delivering geospatial information systems (GIS), imagery, and technical services that help FEMA operate effectively during some of the nation’s most complex emergencies.

NLT provides comprehensive geospatial operations and engineering support designed to meet FEMA’s needs before, during, and after disasters. These services include GIS system engineering, imagery management, imagery-based damage assessments, and the rapid deployment of operational GIS environments to support Joint Field Offices and incident response teams. NLT’s work ensures that FEMA personnel have timely access to accurate, actionable geospatial information when it matters most.

A core strength of NLT’s support is its ability to deliver operational continuity under highly dynamic conditions. NLT teams help stand up and maintain deployable GIS systems that function in austere and time-sensitive environments, supporting emergency operations centers, field offices, and headquarters-level coordination. This capability enables FEMA to avoid disruptions in geospatial services that could otherwise slow decision-making during critical response operations.

NLT has supported FEMA’s long-term recovery missions following major disasters, including large-scale hurricanes and regional emergencies. Through this work, NLT has helped enhance the quality, consistency, and accessibility of geospatial services used by local, regional, and national FEMA stakeholders. The company’s experience spans all FEMA regions and a wide range of disaster types, from natural hazards to special security events.

In addition to field-based GIS support, NLT collaborates closely with FEMA’s enterprise geospatial initiatives to modernize how geospatial data and imagery are collected, processed, and shared. This includes streamlining workflows for satellite and aerial imagery, improving dissemination to analysts and decision-makers, and integrating geospatial data into broader enterprise systems used for disaster response and recovery.

NLT has also developed and supported mobile and deployable geospatial solutions that enable incident management teams to access critical data from remote or infrastructure-limited locations. These solutions leverage ruggedized hardware and industry-standard geospatial platforms to ensure reliable access to maps, imagery, and analytical tools in the field.

Beyond direct support, NLT frequently partners with large prime contractors on complex, multi-disciplinary FEMA programs. In these roles, NLT contributes deep geospatial, systems engineering, and operational expertise to large-scale application development, integration, sustainment, and technical assistance efforts. This collaborative approach allows FEMA to benefit from both large-system delivery capabilities and specialized geospatial expertise.

Through its long-standing work with FEMA, New Light Technologies continues to support the agency’s mission to help people before, during, and after disasters by delivering dependable, scalable, and mission-ready geospatial solutions that enable informed decision-making and effective emergency response.
