NLT Partners with General Assembly to Teach Geospatial Data Science Bootcamp

As part of the ongoing partnership between New Light Technologie’s (NLT) and General Assembly (GA),  NLT Chief Scientist Ran Goldblatt will instruct a one-day bootcamp on geospatial data science at GA’s Washington, D.C., location.

During the bootcamp,  students will learn how satellite data can be utilized to interpret, analyze and address some of the most challenging questions about processes on Earth – economic, social and environmental. The bootcamp will provide a brief introduction to geospatial data science and a set of tools for satellite image analysis and interpretation that are key for any informed decision and policy making.  It will also introduce students to the JavaScript API of Google Earth Engine, a cloud-based computational platform for geospatial ML and AI analysis at scale.

Geographic data is used in almost every part of technological life– from network design to business management, from urban and environmental planning to disaster response and mitigation. As a result, there is an increasing demand in today’s job market for data scientists that know how to address spatial data. This course will demonstrate how satellite data can be used to track changes in economic activity, map urbanization processes and understand deforestation trends in the developing world.

NLT is proud to support selected participants who are interested in increasing their geospatial knowledge by offering a limited number of scholarships to the class.

Tickets to this workshop are $75. Details for the workshop are included below.

Chief Scientist,

New Light Technologies

Dr. Ran Goldblatt is a Chief Scientist at New Light Technologies (NLT) in Washington DC. Dr. Goldblatt has a background in remote sensing and geospatial analysis, at scale, and the development of methodologies and tools for monitoring natural hazards, LCLU changes, and economic development. Dr. Goldblatt leads multiple projects conducted with the World Bank, including monitoring economic activity with nighttime lights, tracking urbanization processes in developing cities and evaluating deforestation processes. He also supports FEMA’s disaster remote sensing team leading modernization initiatives underway to automate collection, processing, and dissemination of imagery for the national disasters community. This work includes the development of solutions which integrate and catalog a range of governmental and commercial data sources, including USGS’s HDDS, and use of technologies such as Voyager Search, Esri, ENVI, Google, DigitalGlobe, and a variety of cloud platforms. Dr. Goldblatt received his Bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. in Geography and the Human Environment from Tel-Aviv University (Israel) and has worked as a Researcher and Lecturer at the University of California, San Diego.
