Remembering 9/11 As We Move into National Preparedness Month

September marks National Preparedness Month, an important time to focus on the steps we can all take to be ready for any emergency. As the 9/11 attacks taught us, preparedness is not just a good idea but a necessity. The tragic events of that day showed how essential it is to be vigilant and ready to respond to all manner of emergencies, whether natural disasters, cyber-attacks, or public health crises.

As emphasized in Ready.gov's National Preparedness Month resources, preparedness is more than just a collection of supplies. It’s about having a plan, being informed, and ensuring that your family, business, or community knows how to act in a crisis. When disaster strikes, the speed and effectiveness of your response are directly tied to how prepared you are.

Building an emergency kit, developing a communication plan, and staying informed about potential threats in your area are key steps toward readiness. Taking action now ensures that when the unexpected happens, you are equipped to protect yourself and your loved ones.

This month, let’s honor the lessons learned from 9/11 by committing to preparedness. Emergencies are unpredictable, but our response to them doesn't have to be.
