After The Conference: Insights on Countering Misinformation
MARY PRITTS
SENIOR DATA SCIENTIST AND CONSULTANT
This year's JSM theme, "Statistics and Data Science: Informing Policy and Countering Misinformation," was a timely reminder of the critical importance of delivering useful and unbiased statistics.
The session on “Invisible Women” underscored the value of quantifying the truth. By providing objective, measurable data, we can ensure that subjective experiences are not overlooked or dismissed. When we share accurate data with the public and policymakers, we make progress in addressing inequality more effectively.
Another session focused on best practices for using race data. It highlighted how suppressing small counts for privacy reasons can have a detrimental impact on minority groups, leading to what some term “data genocide.” This underscores the need for careful consideration of what we measure and report. Disaggregating race categories is crucial, particularly in research related to health and treatment disparities.
Data privacy remains a top priority, and it was encouraging to see numerous sessions dedicated to privacy and disclosure avoidance this year. Differential privacy, which involves adding small amounts of noise to reported statistics, is one method to ensure respondent confidentiality while still providing detailed data that can inform policy and business decisions.
